The Dingle Marathon is one of the most scenic marathons in the world, boasting some of Ireland’s finest views.
The marathon located around the magnificent Dingle Peninsula, on the rugged Wild Atlantic Way, is an incredibly challenging route, testing even the most experienced of runners, with tough uphill sections and unpredictable weather rolling in from the sea. Fortunately, runners will be enthralled by the awe inspiring scenery and ever changing natural landscape.
The Dingle Marathon exceeds other marathon events for a number of unique reasons: Its route follows Slea Head – one of the World’s most scenic drives; the rich history of the region, from Stone Age forts and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Skellig Michael, and; the unique charm and culture of Dingle Town and its residents.
This is a key event in one of Ireland’s most beautiful locations, where runners and walkers can enjoy its breath-taking scenery and dramatic coastline. This is the only day in the year when vehicular traffic is removed from Slea Head, immersing runners in the unique untouched beauty of the Dingle Peninsula on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Departing the Marina in Dingle, runners will pass over Milltown Bridge, past the forest at Burnham to the shoreline village of Ventry. Here participants will gaze at the panoramic views of the stunning Blue Flag beach. The route departs Ventry and continues West, past Dunbeg Fort. At this point in the marathon, the runners will see the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. The route continues through Fahan, where athletes will have to take care not to get their feet wet! The views are truly spectacular, with the amazing Blasket Islands on display. The road travels northwest by the shoreline, past Coumenoole Strand and finally past Dunquin village. The marathon will cross the finish line in Dingle, where runners will be warmly greeted by spectators and presented with medals.
